Entomologist George Beccaloni of the Natural History Museum in London first discovered the large, venemous centipede when he was on his honeymoon in Thailand. He was looking under rocks near a waterfall and was able to capture a specimen of this large creature.  When in the water, S. cataracta swam like an eel, with its many legs moving in a wave-like motion in order to propel the creature forward, which surely helps during hunting.

Scientists have discovered two new species of geckos in the proposed Lenya National Park, Thailand — currently the Lenya and Nga Wun Reserve Forests — located in the country’s southern Tanintharyi Region.  Myanmar is currently home to 18 named species of bent-toed geckos, four of which are found in forests located in the Tanintharyi Region and neighboring Mon State.

Three new species of Rock Geckos Cnemaspis lineogularis sp. nov., C. phangngaensis sp. nov., and C. thachanaensis sp. nov. of the chanthaburiensis and siamensis groups are described from the Thai portion of the Thai-Malay Peninsula. These new species are distinguished from all other species in their two respective groups based on a unique combination of morphological characteristics, which is further supported by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene (ND2).

A new legskate is described from a small collection of specimens taken off Phuket (Thailand) during a survey of the Andaman Sea. It is the only legskate (Sinobatis ) known from the northern Indian Ocean.

Ansonia khaochangensis was discovered in a limestone cave from the Khao Chang karst tower in Phangnga Province, in southern Thailand.  The cave lifestyle of this new species is a unique and a significant departure from lotic environments common to most other species of Ansonia.

Newly described is a snail-eating turtle, Malayemys isan sp. nov. (Geoemydidae), from the Mekong River Basin in northeastern Thailand (Nong Bua Lamphu, Nong Khai and Udon Thani provinces) and the adjacent Vientiane area in Laos.  The new species is readily distinguishable from others by its stripes.

Researchers from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) have identified a species of blind, walking cavefish in Thailand that can walk and climb waterfalls in a manner comparable to four-footed mammals and amphibians. The discovery of this capability, not seen in any other living fishes, also has implications for understanding how the anatomy that all species need to walk on land evolved after the transition from finned to limbed appendages in the Devonian period, which began some 420 million years ago.
