19 new gecko species discovered in Myanmar

Aided in the search by monks and armed guards, a team of scientists has found an astonishing fifteen, and perhaps nineteen new gecko species in limestone hills in Myanmar.  The geckos all live in the same small area.  The discoveries were made over a two-week period in October 2016, and included 12 new species of bent-toed gecko from the genus Cyrtodactylus and three dwarf geckos from the genus Hemiphyllodactylus.   Author Lee Grismer is currently analyzing another 4 species.  Research was supported by Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and Monte L. Scientists have discovered two new species of geckos in the proposed Lenya National Park, Thailand — currently the Lenya and Nga Wun Reserve Forests — located in the country’s southern Tanintharyi Region.  Myanmar is currently home to 18 named species of bent-toed geckos, four of which are found in forests located in the Tanintharyi Region and neighboring Mon State.

Danio htamanthinus is so far only known from two small streams at Chindwin River in Myanmar (Southeast Asia).  Danio htamanthinus is most similar to Danio choprae and D.flagrans, which are both also from North Myanmar.  Sixteen of the 25 valid Danio species are found in Myanmar.
