A new genus of firefly is described, from the rainforests of Brazil. “Fireflies or sometimes named lightning bugs are not flies. They represent a family of beetles (Lampyridae) whose members have the ability to use bioluminescence during twilight to attract mates or prey. They produce a “cold light”, with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This chemically produced light from the lower abdomen may be yellow, green, or pale red. So far about 2000 firefly species have been found and described.”

A new species of egg-brooding frog is described, from the Atlantic Forest in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil is described.  The new species was thought to represent F. goeldii, but is diagnosed by genetic analysis and morpholoically, having small snout–vent length for the genus, snout tip mucronate, limbs striped, distal subarticular tubercles simple and round on all fingers and toes, open dorsal pouch in females carrying eggs, and tadpoles deposited in bromeliad.

Researchers from Universidade Federal de Goiás, describe a new species of Cassava from the Cerrado of Goiás State, Brazil.  Two other species from the same region were described earlier this year.   This new species, Manihot pachycaulis, has a uniquely enlarged basal part of the stem, plausibly an adaptation for storage of water and nutrients, and is further peculiar for combining morphological characters otherwise characteristic for different sections of the genus. Also in this paper, the anatomy of the Manhiot stem is analysed and described for the first time.
