Four new freshwater crab species disocvered in the Philippines

Four new crab species have been found in Palawan by a research team led by Hendrik Freitag, PhD, an associate professor of the Biology Department.  The crabs were discovered in the freshwater inlands of the island province.  The newly discovered endemic species, together with the previously known Insulamon unicorn discovered by Japanese and Singaporean researchers in 1982, make for a revision of the entire Insulamon genus.

This newly discovered snake has menacing-looking yellow and black scales, dull green eyes and two spiky horns. And it’s named after a 7-year-old girl. Matilda’s Horned Viper was discovered in a small patch of southwest Tanzania in 2009. A new type of snake, a species of bush viper, was discovered in southern Tanzania during a recent biological survey. The snake’s exact location is being kept secret to protect the visually striking black-and-yellow snake from illegal pet collectors.

Recently one species was “rediscovered” in plain sight; the North Pacific spiny dogfish Squalus suckleyi had been considered a population of S. acanthias but has been restored to species status by genetic analysis.  Now, researchers have found an entirely new Squalus species in the Tashi Fish Market in Taiwan.  Say hello to Squalus formosus.

Spongiforma squarepantsii, a new species of mushroom almost as strange as its cartoon namesake. Its discovery in the forests of Borneo, says San Francisco State University researcher Dennis Desjardin, suggests that even some of the most charismatic characters in the fungal kingdom are yet to be identified. Shaped like a sea sponge, S. squarepantsii was found in 2010 in the Lambir Hills in Sarawak, Malaysia. It is bright orange-although it can turn purple when sprinkled with a strong chemical base-and smells vaguely fruity or strongly musty.
